I think MaineYooper said "below the bridge" below? Under? I don't see the difference. On a map south is always down...under. I take it there's some Maine intra-state rivalries going on. Who decided that maps/globes should all be depicted as if North was on top? If we turned all the writing upside down then south would be at the top.

No, we're talking about Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas. Folks from the U.P. (yoopers) like to call us mitten-dwellers "trolls", because we live "under" (below on a map) the Mackinac Bridge. All in good fun I guess, I don't think it's much of a rivalry per se. Although the U.P. has tried to cecede from the rest of the state before so I don't know. Maybe MaineYooper can provide some insight.

I can't provide insight, but I do have a story.

Many years ago a coworker entered the control room and declared to us that he was going to set a land speed record for long distance riding of a bicycle. He figured that since Maine was above Florida, meaning Florida was downhill, (heck, anyone can plainly see that on a map!) that he'd just take off and mostly coast all the way there. I suggested that he bring a parachute as he might be breaking the sound barrier somewhere around Maryland. I kid you not. I couldn't make this up if I tried. I don't know to this day if he ever figured it out or if he still thinks Florida is "down" from Maine. He was one of the folks who'd never been far away from his town of birth... ever.

Yes, what the wyzeOne has said!  All said in jest.  My best friend is a mitten-dweller, and Maggard Razors is too, as is Mike's Natural Soaps and who knows how many others!  Certainly not meant to be offensive.

And correct, the U.P. has several times, I believe, tried to secede.  How we would support ourselves, I don't know.  And I think in the past there was talk of joining Wisconsin, since many on the western end (I grew up in Iron Mountain) felt we had more in common with Wisconsin than with folks in the southern part of the "Mitt".  

Since living in Maine for the last 15 years, I hear similar grumblings about politicians in Portland and Augusta being out of touch with the northern part of the state.  And then there is coastal vs "the other side of I-95", which I heard described as the two Maines, one on either side, just like the railroad tracks segregating towns into haves and have-nots.

My comment was in fun, as I know we Yoopers sometimes get the adjectives "dumb" or "hick" added.  If you have ever seen the Red Green show, or remember Bob & Doug McKenzie, you got a taste of what being a Yooper is like.  And most of us get a kick out of those comparisons.  Yes, my favorite shirts are flannel, and I love my touque!

Now back to our regular scheduled shaving program...  

Eric, these things always amuse me. I was born and reared in Brooklyn and two of the ongoing talks of a breakaway were Staten Island separating from the rest of New York City and all of New York City becoming the 51st state. Here in California we have the ever popular San Francisco vs. Los Angeles so lets divide the state across the middle and make two where there is now one and, the au courant state of Jefferson, that is the counties north of the Bay Area would become the 51st state.  The trouble with all of these is that it is the very diversity of these regions that gives these cities or states their unique character.  Not only that but as a San Diego wet shaver, I would hate to lose my San Francisco or Redding brethren.
