Thats interesting - it probably hasn't been the most profitable crop to grow for some time and now with the increasing popularity of traditional wet shaving and all that goes with it, I suspect growers have been caught off guard.  I don't know how long it takes for the bush/tree to grow to maturity so it can produce marketable quantities of leaves but I suspect that eventually supply should increase to meet demand.  Maybe its time to head for the islands and start a plantation. Smile

Do you know if pimenta racemosa can be reliably and economically synthesized?

I do not, but, if I had to take a guess, I'd say that a decent replacement for use in fragrance blends could be synthesized so long as it was used in conjunction with other notes. As for an exact re-creation, it's likely that it could be done, but not economically.

Great, a run on pimenta racemosa and we have the great bay rum crisis of 2016, the humanity. First world problems I guess Smile Thanks Will.

For me it's gotta be Captain's choice. It was the first bay rum I ever tried and I've tried other bay rums but Captain's choice is it for me.

BTW has anyone tried DR Harris Bay Rum after shave splash ?
Is it good for a Bay Rum fan ?

If you are in Europe, and I think you are, then you should try to source some Extro Bay Rum aftershave. It is by far the best I have tried (in my humble opinion) and very difficult to get outside of Europe as so little of it is made each year that it doesn't get exported often.

Anyone have a picture of the pimenta racemosa leaf? I have seen 3 very different pictures online claiming to be the leafs. I'd also love to see a picture of it's flower if possible?

I have had my eye out for a tree for a couple years now, and sure enough there appears to be a mature one just over a block from my house on the side of the road. I recently picked a leaf and it smells right, but I'd prefer a positive identification before I start experimenting with it.

I'm not the biggest bay rum fan but I picked up a tin of Dr. Jon's Anne Bonny at the Maggard meet-up. This stuff smells great and I can't wait to use it. It's the black tea scent in it that gives it that little something extra and pushed it into the "buy" category for me. It's so nice to be able to smell a soap or aftershave before purchasing it...

That's the great thing about having a brick & mortar store like Marggards nearby...you can smell everything before buying it!

It is a great performing soap too, couldn't really ask for more from a soap.

Please let us know what you think after using it.

....and so begins the slow, gentle seduction. First its Anne Bonny then maybe Barrister & Mann or Mystic Waters and before you know it you'll be powerless in the grasp of the demon (bay) rum! You'll be frequenting sleazy waterfront taverns looking for that next lash of raunchy, spicy bay rum until one day you look in the mirror and don't even recognize yourself so powerful the effect of the Captain's Choice Cat O'Nine Tails that you apply two, sometimes three times a day just for that soul quenching burn that nothing else can provide. Feel the burn Smile

Bay Rum is one of my favorite scents I would have to say I like these in no particular order.

Captains Choice Bay Rum
Derby City Chop Shop Small Batch Aftershave
Ogallala Bay Rum
Wonder Weeds Spicy Bay Rum - found on Etsy

I still want to get some of the others out there and will get around to ordering them this year.
