Fat vs vegan

Which do you prefer?

I’m an animal fat fan when it comes to shave soaps but don’t mind a good vegan base.

I just find fats to have a better performance overall.

The majority of my soaps are tallow. I also have some vegan. If it has good performance and scent I use either.

Would have agreed animal fat soaps vastly superiour until the latest vegan offerings, say the last year or so. Things changed dramatically from my perspective, tipping in favour of the vegans. However, that not to suggest animal fat soaps have deteriorated, simply that soap makers are experiencing a golden age

I’ve had some excellent shaves with Vegan soaps lately. I don’t mind using both fat and Vegan but I do feel animal fats make the skin feel nice and silky smooth post shave.

Better overall slickness/performance, but could also be down to the razor and blade used.

Some of my favorite performing soaps are vegan, like Nuavia and SV. That said, other tallow based offerings like Tallow + Steel and Ethos also perform spectacularly, so I guess for me it is more in the execution, rather than method of "tallow, or no."

I don’t discriminate. If the performance is excellent then it doesn’t matter tallow vs vegan. Barrister and Mann made a vegan base early on which was excellent. I think Will discontinued them because they didn’t sell as well as his tallow although I’m just going from my (hazy) memory on that.

IMO, the bar has been raised so high on both vegan and non-vegan that it’s just a matter of preference on soap maker, scent, and ingredients. I’m trying to avoid soaps with chemicals like tetrasodium EDTA, glycols, etc.

The best vegan soaps I’ve used that perform on a similar level to animal fat soaps are:

Grooming Dept - Aion (Nai base)
Zingari Man x Barrister and Mann - Nocturne
Southern Witchcrafts x Australian Private Reserve - Gravefruit

Same for me, I will never buy a soap with propylene glycol, EDTA, parabens etc. 
I love some vegan soaps : SV, Meissner Tremonia, Sudsy's etc. I don't see the name Cold River Soap Works coming up recently, but I love their Oliva soaps

I forgot to mention Martin de Candre. There is something special about this soap.
