That's certainly an excellent razor. To answer the OP question, vintage is better to some, modern is better to some, some modern & vintage are better to some. Hope that clears it up.

But really, many, including myself, fell into the vintage rabbit hole. But besides spending a couple of dollars in that rabbit hole, I hope everyone found a really good razor. I know I did many times over. Now the same can be said for the modern camp, of which I also belong to that camp as well. And I have several moderns I think shave very well. Currently I reside in the vintage rabbit hole, so if you see me, send money!!!

I have tried some super speeds which I like, Slims, Fatboys, etc..I have only been into it for the past year, trying to figure things out..somebody told me newer razors are the way to go..Merkut, Jagger..trying to get different opinions.

Your money to spend as you like. For vintage, I highly recommend a Slim & a Prewar Fat Handle Tech, a British Fat Handle Tech, & an Aristocrat Junior. Any of those will provide you a superb shave, & can be had for under $25 except the Aristocrat Jr. will run you another $10 - $25.
If you want the shiny of new, go with an EJ de89 or a Merker 34C. If you want closer, switch to a Fatip. And then to muddy the waters some is the Rockwell. The 6c is $50 & the 6S is $100.

So now that everything is answered, the only thing left is your decision...

Gents, I need your advice - I am being offered a 1958 D1 Gillette Gold Toggle in absolute pristine condition, including box and all paperwork. The seller asked me what I intend to pay him for it.

Help me out here: how much is that thing's worth?

I would think that'd go for no less than $250, easily...I sold a silver toggle, I think a 1961, on ebay like 2 years ago for almost $200.

I offered to trade him my RS10 with both plates - he wanted $ 250 on top. Would it be worth giving up an RS10 for it?

It is worth whatever somebody is willing to pay for it (Probably not what you wanted to hear ). Is this for collection or for actual shaving? IMO the toggle isn't the best shave out there out of all of the vintage Gillettes.
