So I recently saw this youtube video by geofatboy that talked about rinsing the razor under cold water instead of hot water. This apparently prevents razor burns.

Have been trying it and I must say there seems to be something here. I usually get good clean shaves almost always irrespective of the razor used. I therefore depend on my alum block to tell me how to rate the shave. Too much burn...not so good and post shave feel not so great.... no burn...thats an excellent shave.

I am noticing that since i started rinsing my razor in cold water and taking cold metal to the face, the alum seems to give great feedback and post shave feel is always superb. Cold metal to the skin also surprisingly feels good.

Anyone tried this? Would like to hear your experience.

Could be the cold razor is constricting blood vessels in the skin affecting your perception with the alum. A cold razor is not mechanically changng the shave though.

I noticed a more comfortable shave with cold water years ago and have cold water shaved since. Cold SS on my skin feels much better than hot. Keep trying it.

The tip in this video is to do everything with hot water except rinse the razor with cold water before shaving. Not what comes to mind when I think of cold water shaving. Seems more ridiculous than anything.

That is pretty much what I do. Hot water in the shower to clean/prep. Hot water to build face lather. Then, cold water to rinse the razor throughout the shave.

Cold water flows from the faucet throughout the shave. I rinse under a flowing stream only. Primarily because I believe it helps keep the lather moving down the drain.

I then use hot water to clean my gear, again hoping it will keep the sewer lines clear.

Then, back to cold water post shave rinse.

It may seem ridiculous, but for me, it has been revolutionary. Hot blades and hot SS razors inflame my skin. Turns it red. Irritates.

Cold water, for me, is a very important part of the routines. Once I discovered it, I didn't look back.

Hot water has its place in the routine, but cold water is for the act of the shave and post rinse.

I'm in , I'll give it a try to rinse the razor in cold water.
I've been using a hot water face wash or/ and shower, neutral temp water to rinse the razor and a cold water rinse.

Yes. I rinse my face between passes with warm water and am only using cold water to rinse the razor and for the final rinse before the alum test.

Its doing somethung good...for sure

I tried it once and didn't notice any difference except it cut down on the enjoyment of the shave. I rinse the razor in very hot water several times during the shave and I enjoy that feeling on my face.

That being said.... I only tried it once and because I didn't enjoy the feeling of the cold razor on my face, perhaps I didn't give it a fair chance. I'll try it again tomorrow and see if I can put aside my personal bias. So many people have said it makes a difference. I don't know... perhaps confirmation bias plays a part. I'm pretty sure it did with me. I didn't really want it to work better. I'll try to be more objective next time around.

I also wonder.... what other factors are involved. I use an Executive Shaving Co. Claymore Evolution.... the Artist Club blades are much thicker than DE razor blades. There is no blade chatter, etc. for that reason. They say the cold razor and blade work better because of physics.... that there is a scientific reason to shave with a cold razor. I don't know... what I do know for a fact: I'm not smart enough to understand physics. Wink
