It’s not like this practice is foreign to me as I have always hit the brushes with a little Dawn every 4-6 weeks or so. Today was the first day I hit my B6 with a Dawn cleaning since her initial cleaning a couple of months ago. Lather was off the charts today. Just insane. I guess the buildup in that dense knot can matter over time. Snowy night here in the Northeast. Enjoy the evening tonight and be safe all.

I get that. Did the same thing last week. Thought that a few of my soaps were acting different like not lathering as easily mostly. I mainly use the same four brushes in rotation. Was talking to one of shaving buddies about it and wondered if a soap could start to die as it got older. He asked me when the last time I washed brush? Did a lather in some Dawn dishsoap and then a diluted vinegar rinse. What a difference, amazing actually!

Declaration has a cleaning solution specifically for brushes that they sell in a tub that looks like a tub of shaving soap and it is outstanding to clean your brush with. I don’t think they sell it anymore but you use it just like you use a soap. Lather it up and then rinse it out. I use it on a ton of my brushes every 4-6 months.

Yes I am a fan of the brush rejuvenator as well. Don’t have any currently but found the old dawn shampoo seems to do the trick pretty well.

What method are you guys doing when you use Dawn to clean/refresh your brush, are you doing a lather with Dawn or soaking the brush in soapy water?

Just the old quick hand lather a couple of times with a rinse in between.

Living on the edge
Can it be any dishwashing liquid or does it have to be DAWN

Do you find the Dawn cleaning more effective than a 10:1 water/vinager soak?

I’ve done the vinegar thing a few times in the past and while it worked I don’t think it offered up anything over this. Of course it may work better for brushes that have never been cleaned and have significant soap and hard water deposits built up but i don’t let my brushes go that long to get to that point. I also was never comfortable with the acidic vinegar being around the hair or maybe messing with the integrity of the knot. No proof of that just personal preference.

I'm with you on not liking the acidity on the hairs, I'm definitely no scientist but I've never really been in love with that idea.
