I'm old.  Lived in Kansas.  There were often gas wars.  I recall $.13/gal

I remember paying 30¢ a gallon, which would have been around 1965 in New Jersey.  IIRC the gas grades were different back then, and included regular and unleaded, but I don't remember which type my car took.   I worked a summer job at McDonald's that year, so I remember very clearly that a hamburger cost 15¢ and a cheeseburger cost 18¢.

FYI the Energy Information Administration has published a table of gasoline prices in constant and current dollars from 1929 to 2011.

Cheapest I ever paid?  I was a high schooler farming 30 acres that I could use dads equipment on but I had to buy my own fuel, fertilizer, etc.  .25 cents in 1975-76.  I recall seeing gas under 20 cents as a younger kid.

In Columbus, Ohio in 1969, regular was between 20 and 25 cents a gallon. During the 1973 gas crisis it doubled to nearly 50 cents a gallon. At the time, I was so upset...I said if gas ever got to more than 50 cents a gallon, I would quit driving! Well, it did go over 50 cents a gallon and I did not quit driving. Per the inflation calculator, 50 cents a gallon in 1973 is equal to $3.26 today. Regular gas in Seattle is near $5 a gallon, and I am still driving.

OK guys I got you all beat but to be fair I will go back to the very late 40s and early 50s in New York and remember walking to my Cousin's house. I would pass this small gas station that had one gas pump and the price for a gallon was 5 cents. Almost hard to believe that today the average gallon of regular in the USA is about $4.32. Diesel is $5.52 and the prediction for the summer is an average of $6.00. California gas is exceeding $7.00 .  My car uses premium because I have a twin turbo engine. There seems to be no end in sight but there is always hope and cutting down on our shaving purchases (right).
