Haven’t been on DFS much lately. Due to major good changes.

5 years ago I was laid off from a pharmaceutical company. Since then I have been doing mostly contract (ie. temporary position) work. I had a 2 year contract at Pfizer. It was extended for an additional year. One month after the new contract I was told it may not be honored. Right before Christmas.

At the same time a job pop up in an email from the various job boards I was active on. To make a long story short I was offered a position AT the interview. I am now the QC Laboratory Supervisor for a contract manufacturing company. WooHoo. The timing was perfect - Devine intervention ML calls it.

It is in northern NH. We will eventually relocate. I am currently living in our cabin. ML is back home getting our house ready to sell. She will work until the end of June to honor her school year contract. Then she will retire. WooHoo!!!

The job is challenging. They make lots of products so I have a lot to learn. I have been there for 4 weeks. I just got a phone yesterdaySmile I get paid holiday, vacation, sick time and a 401K. So much better than being a contract employee with no paid time off and no benefits.

Living up in northern VT has been an eye opener. We have had this place for 18 years but rarely came up in the winter.

This was the temperature Friday morning during my commute.

This is the snow beside the house and then on the deck.

ML spent her Winter Break up here with me. She did my my laundry, grocery shopped and set up for DSL internet service.
She is a great woman, partner and wife.

One day while she was her I arrived home and parked on the slope of the drive behind her car. Three hours later I let the dogs out. Something was amiss. I asked ML if I parked directly behind her as I remembered. Yes she said. Well my car, in first gear and parking brake set - slid backwards down the driveway. And I do mean slid. The wheels did not turn. There was a plow pile of snow behind all 4 wheels. Smile

So the cold and snow are adjustments but not too much. I definitely get cabin fever. There is no one around as the pond is seasonal.
I read a lot of books and now I can peruse the web.

But the cabin is cozy and warm.

Neither of us expected a relocation for a job change at this stage in our lives. But we are looking forward to an exciting new chapter to write in The Mary Lou and Phil Story.

It is good to read that everything is working out to your satisfaction. I don't like all of the snow, but that cabin looks really cozy. I pray that everything continues to go well for you and the wife.

A man, without force, is without the essential dignity of humanity. Human nature is so constituted, that it cannot honor a helpless man, although it can pity him; and even this it cannot do long if the signs of power do not arise.

Phil, that sounds like great new chapter in your lives is starting. Thats exciting. Your cabin looks absolutely beautiful and the winter-ness of it is great too. Peaceful and quiet. I'm Canadian, the snow and cold doesn't bother me. There's no mosquitoes or any other bugs for that matter. I'm assuming you will be hanging on to the cabin right?

I was "retired" almost four years ago now at age 55. I'd always thought I'd work until 60 but its become apparent that my particular industry in this part of the country isn't recovering any time soon and my retirement looks permanent. I think its unfortunate that I'm retired at the point where I'm at the top of my value equation but thats life. I am considering new careers, not sure what yet. I figure I've got 15-20 good years left and I can't spend those years just shaving can I?

Best of luck in your new adventure.

That sounds great! You already know that I wish you and ML the very best.

BTW, I hate change that others institute on my behalf.

FWIW Marco, I can't say enough good things about retirement. If anything it's underrated. Very few changes that others can heap onto me in retirement.
