Hey everyone! I'm having some difficulty with a substance that was beneath the not of a vintage brush I'm trying to restore. I think it is the glue, but there is a lot of it, and when drilling, or grinding it out it melts to the bit.

I've gotten a fair amount out already, but around the edges I'm having trouble as I don't want to damage the handle.

Vulcanized rubber.

It's a pain.

How much deeper have you got to go? Sometimes you break through and the handle is actually hollow underneath. Not always. Just be careful you don't put too much weight into it when trying to go deeper because you might suddenly pop out the bottom and into the table underneath. Big Grin

I'm fairly certain that if I can get the stuff around the edges I'm there. With a nickel in there the gluebump shoes about a mm. Without the nickel it also shows about a mm, haha.

Use the sanding drum attachment if you're using a rotary tool like a Dremel.

Will try that. Probably should have started there, I think I ruined a grinding attachment.

Appreciate the advice. This is my first brush restore. I love the look of a lot of these old ever ready brushes, and I fear vintage butterscotch might become an addiction.

Tape the outside of the handle just in case. You made it this far. Sometimes the Dremel will skip and jump. Blue painters tape or masking tape.

It is addictive.

I've got a couple waiting for knots. Free time too...
