You cannot use a straight razor "a few times" and expect to enjoy the experience. Many people say that it takes about 100 shaves to become proficient using a straight razor. I think that is a reasonable number. Also, straight razors vary in length, blade width, blade grind, and edge honing that it is highly unlikely that the 1st razor you try will be ideal for your shave.

That is no different than using a safety razor. It is unlikely that the razor and blade combination you use for the first time will be ideal. It took me several years of experimentation to learn what works best for my beard and face.

There are mainly three thicknesses ,
regarding DE blades:

-Thin blades have a thickness
of 0.05 mm / 0.002" .
Usually cheap and/or multicoated blades
have that thickness.

-Medium thickness blades are
0.075 mm / 0.003" thick.
Half of DE blades fall in this
category.Usually double coated.

-Thick blades are of 0.1 mm / 0.004" thickness. The other half of DE blades have
that thickness.Usually single coated or
uncoated.

- SE blades have a thickness in the range of
0.25 mm /0.009" up to 0.4mm / 0.016" .
