FWIW, if you intend to recycle the steel you don't want an aluminum can to hold the spent blades. If I could have found a SS can for my SS blades I would have used that.

I took an evaporated milk can and punched holes in it to use the contents. Then after thoroughly sloshing dishwater in it and removing the paper label dried it completely. At that point I had a basically  intact can. A Dremel moto tool and a cutting wheel made the slot. A base coat of white and a finish coat of faux granite or some such finished it.

It will take a very long time to fill it.

Thanks! It took longer for the paint to dry than any other aspect of the "project", and the entire can is recyclable. Just tape over the slot (or crush the can to close the slot) and mark it "Sharps!". Maybe some red paint to alert folks even though they have nothing to worry about; but they won't know that. It was all stuff that I had on hand.

Maybe it'll spur someone on to make one even better out of scraps as mine was.

The wife and I have been using it for 3 or four years and I doubt that it's even 1/3 full.

Whoops! I wrote that it was all recyclable and while technically that may be true, the spine backs of the SE blades that I use are made of aluminum and will probably be lost in the steel making process.

I took a wideboy Gatorade bottle, removed the label and washed it out. It's easy enough to unscrew the cap and throw the blades in. The bottle is thick plastic and anyone can see in it to see what it is. It's about as close as you can get to having a sharps container without buying one.

Now the question becomes, what do you guys do when you fill up the bottle? Do you recycle it, or do you scrap it because it's stainless steel? Biohazard isn't an issue because u can always throw in some bleach and water to keep things clean.

about your home made blade banks?

I use an old pop can as a blade bank. I'm wondering if that's fine or if I need to find a sturdier blade bank to use since i'm not sure a pop can containing used blades is safe to throw into the recycling?

I use the slot in the back of my medicine cabinet. The first blade I put in there made a ding/ting noise. I suspect the couple that lived here since 1954 used it as well.

I think most folks drop them off at a place that takes medical waste, I think. I've never seen a place that'll openly take these though.

You can take the blade bank full of blades to the recycling center. They will shred it all and melt it down.

Baby is starting on baby food... so soon I will have a bunch of nice, small, glass bottles, that will fit nicely in the medicine cabinet, in which to store spent blades.
