For face wash, store brand Noxzema clean from Wally's World is quite cheap and made a big difference for me. Some even use it as a preshave.

Fixderma (FCL) is a good non-drying facewash. More often than not, it's the faulty prep that's the culprit. Also, you may try a preshave oil to improve the experience.
