I was just posting to Frank Dragonsbeard about, what else? Bay Rum! His Ethos Bay Rum is due to release soon and I'm counting on it being an epic bay rum. That was the challenge I laid down in the first post of this thread. Afterwards I was thinking about bay rum (I do that a lot) and bay rum/bay inspired products and one that came to mind was Ryan @ Tallow + Steel and his Baygere which he released last year which is an excellent blend of bay and fougere. Well, before I had a chance to come here and post about Baygere I got an email from Tallow+Steel promoting not just their Black Friday sale but the release of (drum roll please) Grog 2!! Also can't leave out mention of Indian Bay (fantastic) and West Indies (excellent)

Now Ryan promotes Grog as a bay rum for people who don't like bay rum but I think it should also please those of us who not just like bay rum but love love love it. We will see if Grog 2 still pleases the lovers among us. As far as trying to market bay rum to people who don't like bay rum, I personally think it's a mug's game. East is east and west is west and never the twain shall meet. Give them barber shops and fougeres and leave the bay rum for those of us who appreciate it. I recall some advice in a Book called Talent Is Never Enough by John C. Maxwell - If you want to improve your game, work on improving your strengths. Don't waste your time working on your weaknesses. You will always have those and even if you can improve those areas a little, you will have far greater return on your time investment if you focus on improving your strengths. My Point is, I wouldn't spend a lot of time trying to get people who don't like bay rum to like it. They may or may not buy one tub/bottle or may even try to get a sample but if target the bay rum lovers and you do it right we'll buy multiple sets of the stuff and we'll rave about it on the forums and we'll tell all of our fellow believers. Far better return on investment in my opinion. Sorry Ryan, but when it comes to bay rum I just have to speak from the heart.
