Battle Of the Milds (Feather AS-D2 vs Edwin Jagger DE89)

I love both, Feather ASD2 and Edwin Jagger DE89.
But I prefer the second, with the right handle.
The standard one helps not so much to express the full potential of EJ.
With a long and light handle, EJ is my favourite DE razor.
A little more efficient than ASD2, and better balanced.
I call it FrankenRazor PP1489, with Maggard MR14.

I think as i progress through this journey, am starting to enjoy more blade feel. Helps me better respect the razor and let it do its thing.
The milder razors temp.me to take more control and I end up over shaving and often end up with razor burn on my neck.
Have also started to appreciate razor efficiency....how close a shave it gives without being overly aggressive.
If I could classify the AS-D2 as an efficient razor despite being mild, i would have been much happier.

Blade Feel: the Feather AS-D2 is not going to give you much blade feel, but it will give you excellent sonic feedback. You know you've got the correct angle when you start to hear the edge of the blade slicing through the hair. Try several angles until you find the one that's the loudest. That will be the sweet spot. 

Over shaving: Yes! This is what happened to me, too. I couldn't get close enough because I was using the wrong angles. In frustration I kept going over the same areas, buffing until I gave myself a good burn. When I found the right angle, I no longer needed to buff. One or two light passes got me clean.

Efficiency: I'm just now starting to understand what this means. The AS-D2 is actually very efficient as long as I'm holding it at the right angle. This has taken a lot of practice, though. The proper angle is very narrow. Learning how to hold it throughout an entire shave has taken some time and patience.

Y'all may be the victim of what I call Ghost Stubble.

1. Shave and shave and shave and shave and shave and shave, feeling for stubble between razor strokes. 
   
2. Six passes later and it never gets smooth, especially when you rub your fingers ATG.
   
3. Give up shaving and go through whatever post-shave process you like. 
   
4. Twenty minutes later, you feel it and find that you've gotten a BBS shave all along. Any remaining "stubble" has magically faded away.
   

I've been leaning more towards my milder razors and not pushing DE blades past 12 uses for the last few months and I'm getting just as good results with less irritation. I just have discipline myself to stop in time.

I have an EJ DE87, which is pretty much identical to the DE89 except for an ivory-coloured handle. It's one of my favourite razors. I like the appearance, balance, and the feel of the shave.
I particularly like the visual detail of the "rocker" profile of the base plate ends:


Having an all-stainless razor may be nice, but I can't see that it it's worth paying more than five times as much for one. There's also the weight penalty. A Feather AS-D2 is 90g, and the EJs are a much more comfortable (to me) 63g.

After a certain price point ($100-ish?), you're buying jewelry, not shaving gear.

Other mild (non-adjustable) DE razors I like: RazoRock SLOC, '46 Aristocrat, British Aristocrat Junior, and Long-Comb New.

I know, right? I had bought the head alone just to raise the total of the order by enough ($10.29 CAD) to get free shipping, and because I was curious to see if it wasn't just a gimmick.

I was always afraid of trying an open comb and the SLOC actually made it easier the me to get into open comb style razors. Since then, i have picked up the Parkrr 24 C, another gem...gave me one of the best shaves I can remember...just have to know thar you need more of a 45 degree angle on that one.....If you have not tried it....get one someday...it looks very nice too.

Yes indeed, I've always told guys starting out, and have to regularly remind myself, not to keep sliding your fingers ATG and going over your face repeatedly in search of the perfect shave because you're going to wind up with burn and irritation and regret.  As you say, the better approach is to go through your routine and then miraculously after an hour or so your face feels smooth and well shaved without the nasty irritation.

Ok guys....Shave 3 today with the AS-D2 paired with a brand new feather blade....Oh my god....probably one of the best if not the best shave ever. Nice sonic feedback..3 passes and then cleanup...zero skin irritation, BBS, and best post shave feel...skin feels so good...does not feel loke a razor just scraped it.....Often times when going against the grain on the neck durkng cleanup, i could not feel any blade...felt like none was ever loaded....that i did not like....was careful not to overshave but i did as much as i normally do to cleanup every little bit....

Alum block test gave very little burn...
This razor is very efficient withe a feather blade.

I have never used a feather blade before..so am in a dilemma if its the razor or the blade or the combination that makes this a keeper.
