Battle Of the Milds (Feather AS-D2 vs Edwin Jagger DE89)

To be honest I had AS-D2 before and sold it way before I got my WS-D2 and from what I can say it shaves amazing no specific angle etc..

I could be wrong but again speaking from experience using it also handle is a bit slightly longer and that helps balance of razor etc..

Is head different is some extent?? I don’t really know as I don’t have AS-D2 to compare and measure into the detail.

But 100% Wood Edition there is something about this razor in a good way I can sure compliment and the way it shaves.

Ketotrader, it looks like you and I are walking down the same path right now. Like you, I'm trying to figure out how to get the best performance out of the Feather AS-D2. Though I've used mine about 150 times, I still feel like a novice. I've got the point where I get a good, clean shave without having done any damage to my skin. The great virtue of the AS-DS is its mildness, which allows me to give myself three passes, day after day after day, without irritating my skin. Getting the blade angle right was key to this. Overall, I'm happy that the Feather AS-D2 is turning out to be a very comfortable razor. It's one of only a few that lets me use a Feather Hi-Stainless blade with no discomfort at all. But I'm perplexed by how such a sharp blade still leaves me with noticeable stubble only a few hours after I've shaved. I wish I could get that DFS feeling to last the whole day.

Like others have mentioned, the Edwin Jagger DE89 is a considerably more aggressive razor than the AS-D2. It's designed to take off more beard (and skin) with each pass. In fact, I don't even think I could call it a mild razor. I have to limit myself to two passes with the DE89. Otherwise, I'll start noticing some irritation in a day or two.

I think as i progress through this journey, am starting to enjoy more blade feel. Helps me better respect the razor and let it do its thing.

The milder razors temp.me to take more control and I end up over shaving and often end up with razor burn on my neck.

Have also started to appreciate razor efficiency....how close a shave it gives without being overly aggressive.

If I could classify the AS-D2 as an efficient razor despite being mild, i would have been much happier.

I'm only 2 shave in...guess i need to give it more time to win me over.

I love both, Feather ASD2 and Edwin Jagger DE89.
But I prefer the second, with the right handle.
The standard one helps not so much to express the full potential of EJ.
With a long and light handle, EJ is my favourite DE razor.
A little more efficient than ASD2, and better balanced.
I call it FrankenRazor PP1489, with Maggard MR14.

Blade Feel: the Feather AS-D2 is not going to give you much blade feel, but it will give you excellent sonic feedback. You know you've got the correct angle when you start to hear the edge of the blade slicing through the hair. Try several angles until you find the one that's the loudest. That will be the sweet spot. 

Over shaving: Yes! This is what happened to me, too. I couldn't get close enough because I was using the wrong angles. In frustration I kept going over the same areas, buffing until I gave myself a good burn. When I found the right angle, I no longer needed to buff. One or two light passes got me clean.

Efficiency: I'm just now starting to understand what this means. The AS-D2 is actually very efficient as long as I'm holding it at the right angle. This has taken a lot of practice, though. The proper angle is very narrow. Learning how to hold it throughout an entire shave has taken some time and patience.

Maggard's V3 head is very similar to an Edwin Jagger DE89. It may be slightly more aggressive, but somehow it's also a bit smoother. I pair it up with a Maggard MR 6 handle, and for about $20 USD I've got a razor that runs with the very best of them. 

ischiapp: since we're on the topic of mild razors, let me ask how your Henson razor is working out? Is it too mild for you?

Maggard's V3 head is very similar to an Edwin Jagger DE89.

Maggard V3 is a chinese head, very well done.
But as all I've seen, It's a Standard Plus geometry.
And It's a little lighter.
The original EJ on MR14 I find absolutely perfect.
Fast, easy, efficient. A pleasure to use.
And YES ... It's a deal for the price.

... let me ask how your Henson razor is working out? Is it too mild for you?

Not sure if AL13 Mild is too mild.
With three passes, as my usual daily shave, It's totally efficient.
