any of you shave using a few different razors within the same shaving session?

To me it’s logical to not use the same razor for subsequent passes.

It’s plain logic.

Cumbersome ? Yes !
Plain logic ? Yes !

A razor removing 2-3 days stubble will be very harsh on the subsequent passes.
I can’t see anyone disagreeing with this.

I use two razors for one shave.

Efficient one for first & second pass

Mild one for last pass.

If using a DE razor, I also use a very sharp blade in the mild razors and a more smooth blade in the very efficient razors.

Using an efficient razors on the first pass and a mild razor on the final pass is just like using an adjustable razor, where you start with the high blade gap on the first pass, then adjust the blade gap down on the subsequent passes.

Do you throw away both blades after each shave?

I typical use a blade for 3-4 shaves.

In comparison shaving I’d use two of the same razor when exploring a new razor blade but that was years ago. Now I keep a mild and thin headed razor loaded with a feather (Mamba, pre-war tech) to clean up around my nose when using fat headed razors like Fat Boy, Rockwell, or Futur, but even then not often.

I've had a Refrigerator Logic Moment about this.

There is no more additional blade wear on the first pass than on 2nd or 3rd passes. By that I mean 3 first passes on a single blade results in no more wear than a 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd pass on a single blade. It's like sawing down an acre of trees, then going back and making all the stumps 2 inches shorter. It's the same amount of cutting in each pass.
Using a blade in an "efficient" razor causes no more wear to it than in a mild one.

About all you could say is that replacing your blade more often might give you better results, but many (me included) hold that the best shaves on a blade are typically on the 2nd or 3rd shave (with 2, 3, or 4 passes per shave).

dominicr You mentioned you shave your head every day. I did this for awhile, but received some razor burn. If I were to go back to an every day shaving regiment, do you think switching from my Wunderbar to a milder razor every other day or so would help prevent the razor burn?

I have a starting rotation, mostly DE's, then a crew of closers, all SE's, the latter to do pick ups on my head shave if necessary.

CHSeifert I get you, but for me the cumbersome nature of using more than one razor outweighs. I remove the blade and clean my razor after each use. With more than one razor, this starts getting very tedious.

Ohhh but I agree.
When I’m lazy or in a hurry, I only use one razor for my shave, but ideally the whole idea of using two different razors is legit.

It seems to me, you should find yourself an agreeable adjustable? Dial it to your heart's content. There are some very good vintage adjustables and some even better modern adjustables.

I also have many 3 piece DE razors capable of removing 10-15 days growth in a single pass and still be completely smooth and comfortable on passes 2, 3, and 4. Never being anything remotely close to harsh. Harsh gets put on BST pretty fast. What kind of razors do you use that are acceptable in the first pass but get harsh after?

The only time I use 2 razors is to compare them side-by-side. I don't head shave and I am not a daily shaver. Just whenever the mood strikes or the occasion requires it.
