George Orwell's classic is once again a best seller. I listened Tuesday past to a fifteen hour radio broadcast of the definitive audio reading. A repeated and early literary device in the opening pages was the repeated mention of mediocre, yet impossible to acquire blades. This may harken back to his service for the Republic in the Spanish Civil War. George was checking his men in the trench, and at six foot two exposed himself to a Nationalist sniper. The bullet entered his neck miraculously missing both artery and spine. He survived, but invalided had to now dodge Republicans seeking to purge his small party. His wife literally whispering
'get out now' as Soviet led police entered their hotel. She lay in bed with his passport as they searched their room. Orwell spent days incognito on the streets; unshaven until she arranged passage back to the UK. Reading it made me rethink dismissing several serviceable blades and the freedom to buy them.
